The Heart of a Dancer..A Queen Remembered

Good morning ladies and gentleman, as October comes to a close for the month, we remember those who have fought for their lives and are still fighting to this day to find a cure for a disease that comes in many forms. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and our job is to be educated and aware of the early signs and stay united in the fight for the cure. Breast Cancer is not just a women’s disease but also a men’s disease.

I want to tell you a story about a daughter, mother, wife and accomplished dancer. Her name Sonia Vargas.

This is her story told by my dear friend Valerie Padilla, her daughter.

Sonia Vargas, 23 years ago never knew that simply taking a bathe would change her life forever. She worked as a secretary, was a dedicated mom, wife and she loved to dance. She taught her daughter Valerie, everything she knows about dancing, which I have witnessed first hand, from the Salsa, Tango, Fandango, Bolero and many more. Sonia was around 39 years old when she discovered a lump under her arm during a routine breast exam. Monthly exams of your breast are very important for early detection.

After discovering this lump, she immediately went to the doctor and had a mammogram done and they discovered a mass in the early stages. They were able to start her on chemo and began her fight. Sonia, a beautiful woman, lost all her hair and like most woman, the depression started and she felt she was no longer attractive. The family did everything they could to help her regain her confidence by buying her wigs and telling her she was beautiful everyday to keep her spirits up. Positive prayers and proper treatments made the cancer go away….so they thought.

One year later, the breast cancer that once was a distant memory, came back more aggresive. Sonia was given not alot of options accept for a masectomy. Women who are faced with the prospect of losing their breast, it is not an easy decision. We pride ourselves on how we look and in making this decision she decided to do nothing. Of course, the cancer decided to spread and it invaded so aggressively that it grew out of her body as a 3rd breast on her chest and became a part of her everyday life. She, like many women loved to look and smell good at all times and to have to live day by day with a growth on her chest, losing her hair and feeling sick all the time, it felt like she lost a big part of herself.

Her daughter Valerie, said that as her mom became sicker, she had to take care of her bathing and feeding her regularly. Valerie accounts that the growth smelled like rotten meat to everyone and people stared at her all the time. As the months went by, she became thin and frail and was admitted near Fathers Day of June 1998. The hospital she was admitted to was where she worked and she had the best care around her family and friends. When she was in the hospital, her doctor told her that it was so aggressive that chemo was not working and there was no cure.

She had to make another decision and she decided to keep it from her kids. Valerie was a teenager and being the oldest of 3 children, she felt helpless, pain and she wanted to do everything she could to take care of her mom. Her mom was her inspiration and hero growing up doing the dance group together and she just wanted to help her mom. After awhile, Sonia couldn’t speak but she could hear everyone. All her family, friends and co-workers did a prayer chain and sent flowers to lift her spirits.

October 24, 1998, Sonia Vargas got her wings at the age of 42 and left behind a spirit in her family that will last forever. It has been 21 years and Valerie celebrates life everyday for her.

Valerie and the women of her Empowerment Group just recently took a trip to Puerto Rico October 11, 2019 and we celebrated Valerie’s 43rd birthday!! Chapter 43 for Valerie was important to her and sharing her moms story touched all of us.

Her moms angelic looks, spirit, heart for dance, her love and caring for others and beautiful personality inside and out shines through her everyday.

Below is a chart of what to look for when you do your monthly breast exam. Early detention is the key.

I want to give a big thank you to Valerie Padilla for allowing me to share her mom’s story and to educate other women about the importance of early detection and treatments.

                                 MUSIC

I love the sound of music. I love all different genres.  I am a fan of how music can soothe the soul.  If I want to escape within myself it is my way to solitude.  Music lowers my blood pressure, it balances my mood and it is very therapeutic for my disabilities and it also eases my anxiety.

31 Day Challenge-Day 23

Text_Over_Photo1565902150329[1]

We all know those things that make us tick…makes us want to say Why? So here are the things that really ANNOY ME..

  1. Gas Tank – Every time I get in a car, the fuel light is on. A car can’t run without gas so why keep the tank empty. I believe in keeping the gas tank full or at least at a quarter of a tank full. A body is made up of 80% water and to deprive it of it…it will die just like a car.
  2. Little Bit Left –When you are down to the last little bit of fluid in a carton or jug, it should be topped off in the cup, not put back in the fridge.
  3. Politics – I do not like talking about it, reading about, or seeing it on all my news feeds. What is going on with the government really doesn’t matter to me…it’s all like a big soap opera for me. Entertainment with no end.
  4. Being Ignored – Well this is self-explanatory. I hate when I start talking and I have to repeat myself.
  5. Indecisiveness – On a previous post, I stated that when I go to a restaurant, I know what I want before I get there, I don’t like to go through a drive-up and people are indecisive.
  6. Your Word – When a person says they are going to do something, I expect them to do it. Your word is important when you make a commitment. If I have to follow-up with you several times, it tells me that what you said you would do is not as important to you with me then I can’t trust you.
  7. Liar Liar Pants on Fire – I hate when people lie to my face. I just wish everyone would tell the truth, it would be a whole lot easier in this world.

That’s it for now…stay tuned for Day 24 tomorrow..

31 Day Challenge-Day 21

Text_Over_Photo1565902021883[1]

Day 21…hmmm…something I miss. This I had to think about a bit because there are a lot of things I miss but If I were to look at the last 25 years, I’ m looking at my childhood and how things were when I was a teenager. I can remember the words…”Pounding the Pavement”

  1. Job Market has changed dramatically. Newspaper and flyer ads on bulletin boards. It used to be that you walk from employer to employer to fill out job applications and meet face to face with people who were your boss…now…fill out an application online and wait for talent acquisition to email, then first interviewer to contact for interview then you interview with someone else who may or may not be your boss…keep your application on file. This application process is convenient if you have a computer or cell phone but for others it creates a lot of eliminated candidates. My daughter is 16 now and she is doing it the old-fashioned way and she has had 2 interviews so far. Personal connection is lost between employer and candidate online.

1526116

2. Being able to get The News only on television. It seems like every time I turn around, I am unable to shield myself from all the bad news and anxieties of this world. I really believe that as the world gets worse with global warming, bombings and lack of respect for the people who want to wake up every morning and live their life, we will never see the light of day. I really don’t care for politics, I don’t like hearing about how much worse the people who run our government are doing. I am so tired of people not being able to leave their homes because they are afraid and with this happening…the rise in mental health issues and sicknesses allows for government and drug companies to make more money. It sucks!! Can we just go back to having 6pm and 11 pm news only and cartoons with great movies in between?

Related image

3. Last but not least…Courtships. Why is it every time I turn the television on I see teen pregnancy shows or couples divorcing after 1 year. I have been married 20 years and I have seen it all. These days it seems like it is harder to get a mate and people are just settling with the first person that looks their way. While they are looking, it seems there is the rush to procreate and have no commitments. What has happened to asking a girl out, taking her on many dates, getting know each other and then talking about plans to get married then have a family….everything is all backwards and twisted now!! Maybe I am old-fashioned but I think there wouldn’t be confusion if we were made to only be attracted to who we are supposed to be with and everyone else look like aliens…lol.

Yes, it is Day 20…11 more days to go!! Hope you guys have enjoyed reading my open book..lol.  So, today, I am going to talk about 10 years from now.  We really don’t know where we will be or whether we will even be alive but one thing is for certain…I take it

Image result for free images of one day at a time

Fear of the unknown doesn’t help you live your life to the fullest.  For me, Life starts from the moment I wake up and continues on into the next day with new ideas and discovering new things.  I keep my brain refreshed by challenging myself and keeping up with what my teens are doing.  In 10 years, my oldest son will be 31, youngest son 29, and my daughter 26 while me and my husband will be 52 and 64.  I am seeing myself still traveling and probably with my teens having their own families, I will be visiting them and my grandchildren.

31 Day Challenge-Day 18

Text_Over_Photo1565281120002[1]

What I am afraid of? Most people are afraid of heights, spiders or being hurt by people. For me, it’s gets a little deeper for me. I have watched a lot of my friends and family members get sick and die so if I had to be afraid of something…it would be losing my ability live my life. I have so much fun interacting with the world and seeing what it has to offer, so for me to not be able to do that anymore, it would sadden me. I know I have a purpose in life and I am not going to waste it feeling sorry for myself and the limitations I may have.

For those of you who don’t know me personally, I have to endure many things as far as my health has been concerned in the last 4 years and I am finally getting to the point where I am comfortable talking about it in an open forum. Support from others who love you is important and taking it one day at a time is key.

In my daily life I struggle with:

Image result for free images of carpal tunnel

Image result for free images of mental health

Osteoarthritis throughout my whole body along with Fibromyalgia. I have 3 herniated discs in my back along with degenerative disease so my range of motion is very limited to walking and stretching. I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome due to a work-related injury. I suffer from high anxiety along with ups and downs. I have to keep my blood pressure regulated along with dealing with headaches on and off. All of these things seem very major right now but for me, I am able to live my life accordingly and when that is not an option…I am scared when it isn’t.

Live your best life now, don’t waste it.

That’s all I got for you today…I know this one was a tear- jerker but I promise tomorrow you will laugh…lol
