My weekend as a Queen…trip to New York City

New York City...home of the Yankees, Statue of Liberty and the birthplace of rhythm and blues- Harlem.

This was my second visit to New York.  I visited in December 2017 with my beautiful daughter Briana, who celebrated my birthday with me and got to experience for the first time New York city in the winter time.

I left for New York on May 24, 2019 on Delta airlines, which there was a delay in take-off due to a gasket that needed to be replaced.  These planes come equip with in-flight movie and television selections and also complimentary drinks and snack of your choice.  I was able to capture the CitiField  baseball field when landing in New York.

When I arrived, I had to call my hotel for a shuttle, which was very convenient for me not having a car.  I stayed at the Extended Stay Suites in Queens.  It was located in flushing and the hotel was very nice. I didn’t get to do sites because of the distance, if I did get around it was Lyft and ordering through Grub Hub.  I f you ever stay in New York..stay in the city..it is less expensive and you can travel by subway like me and my daughter did the first time.

The next day, I was getting ready for the highlight of my trip..The Valerie’s Women’s Empowerment Group 1 year anniversary Gala!!  It was exciting to meet so many women who share the same heart as I do for others.  This group has been apart of my daily life since last year and the women who made it all possible and getting such incredible women together is Valerie Padilla.  She started this group May 25, 2018 and wanted to make a difference not only in women’s lives but help those in need in her community.  Check out my post in Getting Real section called ”You are a Queen today and everyday…women-empowering-each-other-2019″

I had such a great night with all these ladies.  Everything was so elegant and beautifully done.  We all ate, drank, cried, danced, laughed and hugged alot.  I was so overwhelmed by how much everyone loved one another in sisterhood and lifted each other with touching speeches and memorable moments.

A heartfelt moment where I hadn’t even got out my seat and I started crying…..

Loving yourself and others unconditionally…Priceless” L.S

Valerie gave out many trophies to her Queens that were close to her heart and this is me receiving mine for being that women who inspires her and continues to do wonderful things for others. It is truly amazing how self-less she is and how many lives she’s touched

The Guest of honor Queen Valerie wears many hats but she wore her crown that night….

She is a dedicated mom, wife, sister, best friend.

In leaving the party, I had some difficult getting my Lyft driver to pick me up in front of my address…which I couldn’t figure out for the life of me but I had these two ladies that helped me out tremendously and I thank them so much!! That is what women supporting each other is all about.

The next day I was so tired but nothing is going to stop me from coming back.  I am so looking forward to what is next on journey…and the story is to be continued…..

Questions from Mrs. Ski

  1. Why do you love blogging?  I love to write about my experiences and share them with the world.  I believe that if one writes down in words and express their feelings about things, share ideas and go on adventures with others, it is very healthy for the mind and soul.
  2. What is your favorite hobby besides blogging?  I love to travel.  Wherever the wind wants to take me to I try to go.  I like experiencing new things and meeting different people and cultures.  I wish I had unlimited funds but hey you only have one life…live it up!!
  3. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?  Well, right now I am working on finally using my passport and travel to Puerto Rico with a group of wonderful ladies.  This will be my 1st time but if I wanted to just go on vacay for a week all-inclusive Hawaii for me!!
  4. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog?  I am a mom of three teens, wife and blogger full-time.  I recently retired after 23 years of retail after being disabled.  So I take care of my family and travel when I can to see the states.  My blog was inspired by my family of 5.  We are such a close family, not to say we don’t have our battles but I tend to write alot about our entertainment such as music, movies, sports in Florida and common everyday things that make me so proud of my family.  I also feature bloggers and entrepreneurs to add a business side to my blog to inspire others who want to find their passion.
  5. What is your favorite season?  Since I live here in Florida, we only have one season HOT….lol  What I can tell you is that because my wedding anniversary is in April, I love Spring…its the season of love for me.
  6. How often do you post in your blog?  I usually go in spurts and pull an all-niter where I will schedule at least 4-5 new posts per month depending on what is happening that month.  This week I worked on 5 posts and that will probably be it until the end of the month.
  7. Do you love blogging?  Most definitely!! I am avid in writing out my experiences and love to share with people.  I especially love when I post something that sets a light bulb off in someone’s head or makes them feel special and inspired after reading it.
  8. What is your favorite type of food?  I don’t have a favorite type but I am very picky when it comes to what goes in my mouth.  No room temperature, No legs on it or feet, Not the color of puke and it has to be neat on my plate otherwise I don’t even give it a second look.
  9. What got you started blogging?  A couple years ago I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and I needed an outlet to give myself a purpose for getting up in the morning.  I’ve had alot of family tragedies over the past few years and this seemed to make me happy.  Today, I am doing so much better coping and my blog pieces have inspired and I have made countless amount of people happy.
  10. How did you choose your blog name?  Well, my blog is inspired by family entertainment so I knew that had to be in it.  Next, the topics I talked about had to have music and movies in it.  I had to come up with another M to describe my life of excitement and chaos at the same time so I came up with  M-music, M-movies and M-madness of Family Entertainment.
  11. What is your least favorite chore?  I do not like Nagging.  It seems that all we do daily is tell people to do the same thing over and over and they act like they are listening.  I have to add that to tasks to do daily on top of chores so I count that as a chore.

Questions from Charli Dee

  1. Which of your blog post is your favorite?     “The cover comes off…no more filters”  I wrote about being able to be free from having to look the way society expected me to and teaching my daughter the same.
  2. What is your favorite color?    My favorite color is Black or Red, especially when I am picking out a nice car.  I love the shine it has.
  3. What is your favorite food?  I don’t have a particular favorite because I love all food but I do have a couple rules before eating it- it has to be hot, not spicy, not moving and look good on the plate, presentation is key.
  4. Do you have a secret talent?  I recently found out that I am really good at creating ideas in my head while I sleep.  Most of my blog posts come after I have been dreaming.  I probably could write a book but I wanted to start my hand in blogging first to see how it goes..lol
  5. Which season(Spring, Winter, Summer, Fall) is your favorite?   So, I live in Florida and basically we have 3 seasons-Hot, Very Hot and Don’t Even Bother Coming Out Hot..but when I lived in my hometown Cleveland, Ohio for 35 years, I loved the Spring with fresh flowers and it was a great time to clean inside and outside of your house.
  6. What song would be your theme or anthem?  My current theme song is “I will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.  I have been through so much in the last 6 years that I am a survivor.
  7. Who is your favorite celebrity?  Surprisingly, I don’t have one.  I am all about knowing the real person not the character they play on t.v. so I really can’t say that I love any celebrity.
  8. Do you have a favorite book?  Right now, I am trying to get into reading but can’t seem to find the time or me time for that matter to get it done.  I have 3 teens and a husband who take up most of my time. I write in my blog early in the mornings and that’s about all the time I have.
  9. Do you have a favorite movie?  Well, I actually have 3- Saturday Night Fever, Jackie Brown and Goodfellas.  I can watch these over and over and never get tired of them.
  10. Do you have a t.v. show you’re binging on right now?  I think if I can remember a couple weeks back, I watched the new show “The Enemy Within”  This is a must see!!
  11. What is the one thing you love most about blogging?  I love being able to share my life with others through my eyes.  Writing about things that are on my mind and being able to share  with others what inspires me about them.Related image

The end of a season….123…Team

P4_1557919910722[1]Lady SoftballThis is my daughter Briana(8) she played 3 positions on Lady Naughts Softball (Second, Third and Short-Stop)

Lady Naughts Softball team played 16 games and had a season like no other in past years.  This group of ladies ended the season 7-9, when in previous years both JV and Varsity didn’t win games at all. The girls played hard and with a lot of heart along tears shed at some of the games.  Lakeland High School should be proud of these girls because of their determination and the way they practiced 5 days a week and showed up to PLAY.

Finishing the season out with 7-9 , so proud of these young ladies!!

On May 10, 2019, Lakeland softball coaches Chip and Mike had a Softball banquet to honor both JV and Varsity softball teams along with an appearance from Deron Collins, the Athletic Director of Lakeland High School.  The ladies were all given gifts from their coaches, were praised on their performances and exchange gifts with each other as a team to show their appreciation for one another.  Here are some of the ladies from the team all dressed up  for the banquet including my daughter Briana.

The Cover Comes Off….No More Filters!”
The other day, my daughter was getting ready for her date and she asked me “Do these pants make me look fat..and does my hair look right?” I said, “You look beautiful princess.”

“The question I am asking myself is, “Why am I telling her she is beautiful, when I can’t even be convinced myself I am beautiful on the outside as well as inside…so I decided…No More hair extensions, perms, just natural back to my roots. Lip gloss and baby oil.”

-I have short grey hair….why?….Life and illness
-Stretchmarks on stomach, butt and thighs….why?….3 beautiful angels born who are my whole world
-Boobs sag almost to my stomach…why?….Its Gravity..lol
-I forget things sometimes….why?….Im 41
-I gained 10 lbs this last year….what am I doing about it?……Eating healthier and walking

*So in Essence…I want men and women to know that until you are comfortable with your own skin inside as well as outside, the world will always expect you to look like you came out of a magazine. Inspired by my beautiful princess, Briana. Love you mom❤

Love, Love, Love this months Spotlight!! She is just so extraordinary with the amount of energy and passion she has for people all over the world. We met last year through social media and it has been such a pleasure to watch her be so successful not only in business but in her own day-to-day life as a mom and wife. She is such an inspiration to me and I wanted to share her with you all…meet my good friend Kate Scully.

The many faces of Kate Scully…..

Check her out on Facebook and Instagram

Me: “What is your name?”                  Kate: “Kate Scully.”
Me: “Where are you from?”

Kate: “From Chicago, spent the last decade abroad in the middle east, and just moved back to Chicago last year!”
Me: “Tell us about your lovely family and what you all like to do for fun?”

Kate: “I have two wonderfully crazy sons, Jameson (5) and Rhys (3), my husband Joe, and our puppy Louie who is a 60lb bernedoodle. We love traveling, going on adventures, the beach, and just hanging out together as a family.”

IMG_20190411_094620Me: “Tell our readers all about your business(s) and what’s in store for 2019?”

Kate: “I am a wellness mentor with a virtual franchise in the health and wellness industry. I absolutely love making new friends, connecting with others around the world, and helping people learn how to live their best lives through changing their mindset and nutrition. Big things to come in 2019 as our company is in a massive expansion phase; and I am partnering with other entrepreneurs globally who have a similar mindset and a passion to help others change their life.”
Me: “What was/is your toughest battle personally or professionally?”

Kate: “Probably the last year of my life, moving across the world with my family, dealing with reverse culture shock after 10 yrs abroad, and starting both a brand new business along with a new full time job as well!”
Me: “Share your most inspired story with us from 2018?”

Kate: “During the summer of 2018, I followed my gut and took a huge leap of faith. I left my teaching job and took on a completely a new role as an instructional coach at a new school – which comes full circle as this school is where I went to elementary school! And at the same time is when I jumped into this new business opportunity to start helping more people beyond my classroom walls. I finally feel truly aligned in my passions and my role as a mentor in both the educational setting and the wellness world.”
Me: “As an optimistic women in all aspects of your life and in helping others, is there anything you can honestly say you tried and failed at and never did again?”

Kate: “Yes and no! Of course I’ve failed! Failure is simply a stepping stone to success and I strongly believe that in order to succeed you need to fail forward, many many times. But honestly I don’t think I’ve ever NOT tried something again after a failure. Besides art. 😂 I took an art class in high school which I failed miserably at. Haven’t tried my hand at art since then!!” 😉

Me: “What is your biggest pet peeve?”

Kate: “People who are close minded and refuse to listen or have a conversation.”

Are Women Really Empowered?

“Women empowerment has indeed done a marvelous job on increasing women’s economic and political capacity.

The 21st Century has seen more women contributing more to a country’s GDP than any other century in the life span of the human race.
Behind the glamour of the empowered 21st Century woman is a lady struggling to define ‘self-worth and dignity’.

I was having a conversation with a friend who is a counselor and it was so devastating to hear that despite being well educated, women are not emotionally empowered. Her clientele’s age-group target is women in their 20’s. In this era where we are told that women need to have their own careers, very few are telling the young women that they need to love themselves first.

The young women are still allowing men to define their dignity. When it gets to a point that a woman can permit anal penetration just to keep a man… There is a problem!

I was seated in a restaurant next to a group of women whose conversations were irresistible since they were loud so I was guilty of eavesdropping. They were discussing a lady whose husband isn’t only violent towards her but also towards the house help. The lady in discussion, has a business but the man controls when she runs it. If he is home after a night-shift and wakes up in the afternoon, she’ll have to close her business to go and attend to him. The domestic violence has affected her ability to run the business hence cannot increase the family’s income because her husband controls her every movement. How low can her esteem be????
Whatever happened to male protection of the female species? It has now become male violation of the female species.

That is just a tip of the ice berg of the question on ‘What was the point of women empowerment if women polished their outside and forgot to take care of what is inside?’
Output is a result of Input. When a woman doesn’t love, respect and invest in her personal growth, everybody around her will experience the anguish.

Let’s face it, a woman’s emotions cause a ripple effect.

Whatever is in a woman’s heart affects her immediate environment.
The very first commandment of women empowerment should have been:

WOMAN…… LOVE THY SELF!”

Spotlight for March 2019

This month I am so honored to feature not only a great business lady and mother but a women who has been like a sister to me and a great friend for over 7 years.  We met in 2012 when I was looking for a natural hair braid specialist and she was remarkable with how she did her work that ever since she has been my go to person for everything from braids, sew-ins, curly hair and the recent bold short styles are just many of the styles she has “Slayed” for me and others.  Introducing my girl with the magic touch……

Me:  “What is your name?”
Danielle:  “Danielle Julian but everyone calls me Renee”.
Me:  Where are you from?”
Danielle:  “I am from the beautiful island of Antigua. Located in the Caribbean”.
Me:   “Tell us about yourself and your beautiful family?”
Danielle:  Omg 🥰🥰😊😊! I am a family of 5. I have 4 beautiful children. 3 princes and 1 princess! Love them more than life itself.”
Me:  “Tell our readers how you started with your business and what your plans are for 2019? ”
Danielle: When I was younger my career goals were to be an Immigration Attorney, I started school and while going to school I hated it. I said this is not for me. I was bored and didn’t want to fail so I went and got my braiding license since I already knew how to braid hair. And I fell in love from doing hair! I would watch other stylists in the salon that I worked and I would get so inspired! So i stop going to school and invested in my new career! I gained clientele and grew more as a stylist! I decided to go back to school and obtain my cosmetology license and I now currently rent a suite inside of a Barbershop where I am doing great as a cosmetologist. For 2019 I plan on preparing to open my own upscale salon offering hair and aesthetic services and also provide professional products.”
Me:  “What is your greatest accomplishment to date and why?”
Danielle:  My greatest accomplishment are my children! They are my motivation to do what I do and to grow as a stylist and good person.”

Me: “Do you consider yourself pessimistic or optimistic when it comes to your business?”
Danielle:  “I consider myself optimistic, I am a person who sees so much potential in myself! I picture a vision of what I want for myself and for my business and I can see great things in the future for me as a professional stylist and a successful business woman.”
Me:  “Is there anything in your business you would like the opportunity to change?”
Danielle:  “Not really but I plan to do more in this business than stand behind the chair. I wanna have my own products as well an educational system for future stylists.”
Me:  “What do you love about your business and why?”
Danielle:  “I love putting a smile on my clients face and what gives me more drive is that fact that they are all super supportive of me.”
Me:   “What was the most difficult thing you ever had to deal with when it comes to your business?”
Danielle: Unsatisfied and Problematic clients and working for people who were envious.”
Me:“If there was any advice you would give a young entrepreneur starting out, what would it be?”

Teams….What are they good for?

Sports Bullying” –The act of making a person feel less than worthy in any sport by allowing the seperation of class between team levels.

*This kind of bullying goes unnoticed and is said to be thrown under the rug for the sake of sports reputation.*

” I have 3 teenagers, 2 sons and a daughter who love sports and are athletic in their own sport of choice. What I have seen over the years is that, people don’t play the game like they used to with team support. It is very hard to be apart of a team when there are so many negative factors that stand in the way of helping those who want to become athletes succeed.”
“I have witnessed first hand how the “Politics” of sports begins even at a young age. When children try out for little league or as far as high school with JV and Varsity….why is it that people try so hard at a sport to only get criticised and told you are less of a player because you are not the best.”
“I will give you an example: The term Junior Varsity and Varsity refer to amateurs and experts, right? But what happened to everyone has to “crawl before they walk philosophy”. If a person is learning a sport and trying to become an expert at it…don’t they need encouragement and praise instead of “You suck” or “You are awful” because the last time I checked, coaches were teachers not dictators. If a person makes a mistake you dont critize them for it, you teach them the right way of doing it for the next time. Also, when teams are formed for the same school, the teams are not supposed to be seperated, they are all working for the same school. No one team is more important than the other.”
“Something that needs to change is a learning team being classified as unimportant just because they are new. Everyone deserves an award no matter what sport they are doing because it takes courage and strength to go out there and be in front of a crowd. If one team is scoring points and winning and the other is not, we should still support one another as one team with encouagement not bullying.”

*If you see signs of sports bullying report it immediately!!*

“Last night when I was at my daughters softball game & I noticed that the opposite team had their Varsity cheering the JV of the same school while our Varsity was at the game and didn’t support their team at all. That needs to stop”.🛑
